When Carol Dweck first introduced the idea of a growth mindset, she exposed something most of us already knew deep down: the way you think about yourself shapes what’s possible for you. If you believe your abilities are fixed, as in you’re either smart or not, talented or not, you’ll eventually hit a wall. But if you believe you can grow, learn, and get better, that wall becomes a challenge to climb.
That’s the heart of a growth mindset. And it’s not something you’re born with. It’s something you choose and practice. If you want to build one, here’s how to develop your own growth mindset…
Choose It
Developing a growth mindset begins with making a decision. Growth doesn’t sneak up on you; you decide to pursue it. You say yes to the work, the risk, and the process.
Name Your Fears and Limiting Beliefs
You can’t conquer what you won’t face. Fear, negative self-talk, limiting beliefs… they’ll keep you stuck until you call them out. Courage starts when you stop pretending they’re not there. Developing a growth mindset lives on the other side.
Get Comfortable with Discomfort
Comfort is where growth goes to die. You’ve got to step into the tension, the failures, the awkwardness. Falling down isn’t the problem. Staying down is.
Plant Seeds and Be Patient
Developing a growth mindset, and growth in your life, takes time. Seeds don’t break through the soil the day after you plant them. Keep watering, keep showing up. The harvest always lags behind the planting.
Look for Opportunities and Potential
Opportunities are everywhere, but most people are too busy or too distracted to see them. Slow down, lift your head, and pay attention. Developing your growth mindset requires being aware of the world around you.
Challenge Assumptions
That “bad day” you just had? What if it was setting you up for something better? Don’t just accept the first story your brain tells you. Ask harder questions on your way to developing your growth mindset.
Stay Curious
Curiosity is fuel. Growth-minded people ask questions, listen, and expect to learn something new every single day. Don’t assume you’ve got it all figured out. You don’t.
Protect Your Energy
Your time and energy are your most valuable growth resources. Don’t waste them. Name your distractions, guard your focus, and pour yourself into the things that actually move you forward. As you develop your growth mindset, the actions you’re taking and investing in should change.
Surround Yourself with Growth-Minded People
You’re going to become like the people you spend the most time with. If you want to grow, find people who are developing their own growth mindsets. Let their momentum pull you higher, and offer yours in return.
See Yourself as Someone Who Is Growing
At the end of the day, developing a growth mindset is about identity. Look in the mirror and see someone who is moving forward, someone with potential still ahead. When the lies creep in, you’re not enough or you’ll never change, fight back. That’s not who you are. You are an individual who is growing and transforming every day.

A Final Thought
Developing a growth mindset isn’t about hacks or shortcuts. It’s about showing up differently every day. Choosing growth when it’s easier to stay the same… Asking better questions… Protecting your energy… Planting seeds… Getting back up when you fall…
The good news? You don’t have to be who you’ve always been. You get to grow.

When we’re working on developing our own growth mindset, what keeps us anchored? Purpose. Whether we’re driving a project at work or driven to grow in an area of our lives, purpose is a key ingredient to staying on track. With the right questions and a clear path, finding your purpose can be simpler than you think.

That’s why I created the Personal Purpose Guide to walk you through the same process I used myself: Reflect. Discover. Craft. Align.
Your purpose isn’t somewhere “out there.” It’s already inside you. You just need to find it—and choose to live it.
Here’s to making that a reality…
